Carrying What We Don't Say
What does mental health mean to you?
Personally mental health means how events in life either present, future or past can affect your daily mood and outlook in life.
Mental health for me can have fluctuations but should be kept in check daily and can affect everyone.
What are the main obstacles you have faced as a Hispanic/Latino(a) when dealing with Mental Health issues?
How did you navigate those challenges, and if any remain, what factors have made them difficult?
As a Latina, there is often a tendency to navigate childhood traumas while also carrying the weight of being the family caretaker.
Layer that with the current political climate that has negatively portrayed the Latino community, and you have just a few of the unique challenges we face when it comes to mental health.
Building a community that is not afraid to speak openly about these experiences has been a powerful step forward.
Technology, when used well, has also played a meaningful role. Podcasts focused on mental health and the growing accessibility of online therapy have helped bring these conversations to more people.
Still, mental health requires real treatment, and that looks different for each of us. What works for one person may not work for another.
Awareness, understanding, and a deeper sense of empathy go a long way, and yet these challenges remain very much present today.
